Serengeti
Serengeti, the home of one of the last true natural wonders: the great migration! The sight of thousands upon thousands of animals moving in unison is simply breathtaking and a must see for any safari lover. It offers everything from adrenaline-filled dramatic river crossings to relaxing in a hot air balloon as you float over the plains for a bird’s eye view of the migration.
Although the migration follows a yearly pattern, the timings are fairly unpredictable and differ from year to year.
It is advisable to book well in advance due to the popularity.
- Jan to March – Although still rainy season, this time is great to witness the calving, migration sits in the Southern Serengeti (Ndutu) and Ngorongoro
- April to June – with the rainy season coming to an end in May, the wildebeest start northwards migration towards the western corridor of Serengeti and Grumeti.
- July to September – Prime time for those hoping to witness river crossings in the western and northern parts of Serengeti, Grumeti and Mara.
- September to October – continue into Kenya’s Maasai Mara, with still chances to see the crossing over the Mara River
- November to December – short rains begin meaning herd starts to move back south towards Serengeti’s southern plains completing the cycle.
